5-HTP plays a role in both sleep regulation and in the balance of mood. 5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin which can then be converted into melatonin (the hormone which helps us fall asleep and stay asleep). However, 5-HTP bypasses the light trigger system which regulates the release of melatonin increasing the release of both serotonin and melatonin regardless of the light and time of day.
Serotonin has a calming effect on brain chemistry and may help reduce anxiety. Serotonin also plays an important role in many other body functions including digestion appetite and pain perception. Our 5-HTP is naturally derived from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia and combines with activated Vitamin B-6 as active P-5-P an important cofactor in serotonin metabolism.
