The iconic JEMJR guitar body style is carved from mahogany and features JEM's signature "monkey grip" logo near the top horn. as well as white coating. Steve Vai prefers the metal industry standard HSH circuit for maximum tonal versatility. The JEM JR is equipped with three Ibanez Infinty pickups. Humbuckers in the neck and bridge positions are equipped with ceramic magnets , which produce more harmonic overtones than regular humbuckers. The single coil pickup in the middle produces a more traditional tone. Simplified controls include master volume main tone and 5-way switch providing endless tonal variations and slabs of explosive tone.

The Ibanez JEMJR also features an ultra-thin, fast-playing maple neck cut to Mr. Vai's exacting specifications. Steve Vai has always been partial to thin neck profiles which simplify the game as much as possible and allow him to play at lightning speed. The 24-fret JEM neck boasts an extremely flat 15 radius 74 inches and Jatoba overlay decorated with Steve Vai's Tree of Life inlay.
