The Excellent Adventure of Paul and Ted In the 1980s, Paul Reed Smith's obsession with golden-era vintage guitars led him to the US Patent Office , where he scanned the records for clues about what made those old guitars so inspiring. One name kept popping up again and again on these old patents: Ted McCarthy. Paul did some digging and found that Ted McCarthy was president of Gibson from 1950 to 1966. During this time he used his considerable engineering experience to help develop dozens of innovative designs who turned the electric guitar into something what it is today. During the McCarthy era, Gibson went from selling 5,000 instruments a year to 100,000 a year. Ted clearly knew a thing or two about building guitars and running a guitar company. So Paul decided to contact Ted and ask for an interview. to pick my thoughts a little. Ted agreed and this interview grew into a long-term friendship. They became such good friends that Paul decided to honor Ted's memory by designing a guitar using all the tips and tricks which he gleaned from their conversations.
