The Miracles of Murphy's Lab On this beautiful ball of water and mud the place we call home is home to 7.764 billion people and hardly any of them know Gibson guitars better than Tom Murphy. Tom is a legend in the world of guitars, and the instruments that bear his name have acquired a deservedly impeccable reputation for their outstanding tone Stunning looks and amazing vintage accuracy. But he wasn't always a Lutheran rock star. In fact, he worked as a professional touring musician for many years and during this time I became closely acquainted with vintage guitars: how they sound how they feel and look. Deciding to stop touring Tom took a job as a finishing specialist at Gibson and eventually became a project manager. responsible for the first reissues of the 1959 Les Paul standard. For some time Tom also gained valuable experience as a master for the stars , and his client list included such luminaries as Jimmy Page, Dickey Betts Joe Perry, Billy Gibbons, Eric Clapton Peter Frampton and Gary Rossington. Now the circle is closed and our friends at Gibson presented Tom with the keys to a brand new institution of sonic wildness at the Gibson Custom Shop: Murphy's Lab. Tom and his team of experienced craftsmen have one mission and only one mission: to create the most incredible recreations of vintage Gibson guitars that the world has ever seen. Step Into the Lab Murphy's Lab is aptly named because that's basically the musical equivalent of what's going on when you give a mad scientist a lab fully equipped with warp engines and flux capacitors. Having a lot of resources behind you , Tom and his team were able to create guitars which are essentially replicas of vintage Gibsons. They look feel and sound so close to the original that it's just scary. How do Tom and his team achieve such unmatched vintage precision? Well, first of all Tom discovered a completely new formula of nitrocellulose varnish for use on aged guitars which mimics the properties of 1950s and 60s finishes to a T. This thinner finish makes aged Murphy Lab guitars look like real vintage pieces.. . They don't just look the part - they're the real McCoy! Certainly The heart of Murphy's lab is the aging process. Part of it what made Tom a legend was its ability to reproduce the natural wear and tear of old old tools aging them by hand. With a trained eye and skilled hands, Tom skillfully imitated the finish and feel of vintage guitars and passed on his skills to the talented team at Murphy's Lab. Although Tom may not age every guitar himself he did a great job teaching his team the Murphy Way and they have done an amazing job of reproducing his masterful work. As a result, each guitar looks like this as if she stepped out of a time machine and feels like your favorite worn-in blue jeans. Wildwood Spec-Tacular Because our friends at Gibson are the coolest people , they were kind enough to allow us to have exclusive Wildwood Spec Murphy Lab guitars. Essentially these guitars get a little extra pixie dust during the assembly process which makes them a little more magical. All tops are handpicked for their exceptional beauty and they are so beautiful that the cases are probably must be equipped with built-in anti-spit protection! But they're more than just pretty faces: they're also absolute sonic titans thanks to their pickups. Each of these guitars is equipped with a...
