Over the years of music publishing, Willis Music Company has developed many of the best composers in the industry. Names such as John Thompson, Edna May Burnham and William Gillock helped create one of the most prestigious directories in the industry. This is how it all started...

  April 1, 1899 Charles H. Willis twenty-seven year veteran of the sheet music industry founded a small business at 41 East 4th Street in downtown Cincinnati. In May 1901 Mr. Willis purchased various sheet music and music books from the John Church Company and moved his business to larger premises at 4th and Elma streets.

Willis Music has grown steadily for ten years carried out in this location. Mr. Willis and his son William H. started publishing methods , collections and sheet music specifically designed for the needs of the teaching community committed to providing the community with complete reliable and accurate services!

In 1910, Willis Music absorbed the business of George B. Jennings and company. The newly registered company was renamed W
. Willis and company. William Willis , son of the business founder died shortly before the company was registered.

Continuing to expand W
. Willis and company purchased the Cincinnati branch of the Cable Piano Company in 1912. Since both companies were located in the same building at 4th and Elm W
. Willis and company then occupied the entire seven-story building. In 1919, Gustave Schirmer bought W. H. Willis and Company making it a branch of J. Schirmer from Boston Massachusetts In 1923 John J. Cranleigh the hot-tempered red-haired Irishman from the Boston Music Company became CEO of the Willis subsidiary.

John J. Cranley started out as a storekeeper at the Boston Music Company. Through his hard work and love for the music business, he naturally grew this small organization into a large corporation. Gradually he acquired more than 50% of the shares...
