DL-phenylalanine or DLPA is a mixture of 50% D-forms and 50% L-forms of the amino acid phenylalanine (phenylalanine is one of the few amino acids , which can be used in its D-form). Researchers believe that D-phenylalanine (DPA) inhibits the action of the enzyme breaking down endorphins and enkephalins. These are squirrels which bind to opioid receptor sites in the brain thereby influencing the perception of discomfort. By interfering with the action of this enzyme DPA can prolong the life of endorphins and enkephalins and their positive effect on comfort levels. L-phenylalanine is a precursor to two neurotransmitters which help maintain a state of wakefulness.
