Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid which can be converted into L-tyrosine in the liver. Tyrosine is used by the nervous system to produce a class of neurotransmitters called catecholamines: dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine. Epinephrine produced from tyrosine in the adrenal medulla acts as a neurohormone known as adrenaline.

Currently known that norepinephrine not only acts as a neurotransmitter supporting good mood and normal sleep, but also protects brain cells promoting normal inflammatory response suppressing oxidative stress and maintaining normal neuronal growth and connectivity.

Dopamine which has long been associated with more primal aspects of brain function linking behavior to reward is now recognized as a mediator of higher order cognitive abilities. Decreased production of catecholamines in the brain which occurs with age may be a factor contributing to the usual decline in cognitive abilities with age. Providing the brain with catecholamine precursors may help normalize cognitive function. An enzyme that acts as a catalyst in the conversion of tyrosine to dopamine can work more efficiently if its cofactors (vitamins B6 and C) are also involved in the reaction.

Supplementation with phenylalanine promotes normal synthesis of neurotransmitters , and clinical trials show that it promotes a good mood.
