Kirkman Alpha Lipoic Acid is an effective and versatile antioxidant nutrient which helps protect the body from free radical damage and as a consequence is a protector of many types of cells and tissues. It also helps increase glutathione production which supports detoxification of the body.
Alpha Lipoic Acid is a unique nutrient with antioxidant effects because it is soluble in both fats and in water. Other well-known nutrients with antioxidant effects may only function in a soluble environment. Due to its dual solubility, alpha lipoic acid functions both in fat and in the aqueous parts of the cell and is capable of defending against a wide range of free radical invasions. Alpha lipoic acid penetrates into all parts of nerve cells and also crosses the blood-brain barrier and protects cells.
Alpha lipoic acid is naturally found in such products like spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, liver heart and muscle tissue of animals. However, its bioavailability from food may be limited because it is bound to protein which is called "lipoyl-lysine". Preliminary studies show that alpha lipoic acid found in supplements may be more biologically active than lipoic acid associated with this protein in food.
